Information

  • In 1986, Congress enacted the Asbestos Emergency Response Act (AHERA) primarily to require school districts to identify containing materials (ACM) in their school buildings and develop a management plan. In 1987, the U.S. Environmental Protections Agency (EPA), finalized a regulatory program, which enforces the AHERA.

    In compliance with AHERA regulations, East Newton Schools had their facilities inspected by the EPA accredited building inspector. During the inspection, samples were taken of building material suspected of containing asbestos. The results of the inspections and laboratory analysis of the sample have confirmed the presence of the ACM in portions of the school’s facilities. It is important to note that these materials are in a form and condition that does not pose an imminent health threat to students, faculty or patrons.

    In compliance with AHERA, East Newton Schools has developed a management plan for each of their facilities. Based on the inspections the school district prepared , and the state approved a comprehensive management plan for handling the asbestos located within its buildings, safely and responsibly, AHERA requires a periodic walk-through (called surveillance) every six months of each area containing asbestos. AHERA requires a triennial inspection.

    This memorandum is to inform you that the AHERA Management Plan including inspection reports, periodic surveillance records, triennial inspections and other asbestos related activities and documents are available for your review. If you are interested in reviewing a management plan, please ask for it in the office of each building.

  • Per the requirements of the recently enacted “Get the Lead Out of School Drinking Water Act”, East Newton School District has begun testing all water fixtures throughout the District. 

    The EPA's National Primary Drinking Water Regulations for Lead establish a treatment level of 15 ppb (parts per billion) in municipal drinking water systems. Missouri Senate Bill 681 “Get the Lead Out of School Drinking Water Act," passed in 2022, outlines that each school shall provide drinking water with lead concentrations below 5 ppb. Further, any school that tests at greater than 5 ppb of lead concentrations shall provide results and remediation plans to parents and staff. 

    In response to the new state law, East Newton School District has been working to test water outlets in each building and make remediations where necessary to maintain lead concentrations below 5 ppb in outlets that provide drinking water, cooking water, or water that is used for cleaning utensils used for drinking or cooking.

    As testing and remediation work is completed in East Newton School District, test results and remediation updates will be posted in this space prior to the state-mandated reporting date of August 2024.
